INTRODUCTION TO LIVERPOOL

I'm a musician/teacher from Liverpool about to embark on an exciting adventure. I've spent a long time planning which places I want to visit and in what order. On my travels I'll be taking lots of photographs, getting involved socially, checking out the music scenes, finding the best restaurants, hotels and bars, places of interest and travel deals.  Travel tips will gradually build into a library over the coming years and I hope to make lots of friends along the way.

I have decided to start with my home town, a great place to start!

The majority of Liverpool folk have strong Irish ancestral roots and are renowned for their humour, warm welcomes, friendliness and community spirit. It is a City that is truly multi-cultural in the sense that we integrate with each other within the community and its sub-communities. It is still very normal in Liverpool to borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbour, then pop around to see an eldery friend in case they need something. There's a support network like no other if you are decent, honest and open. Doors will open readily and the magnetism can be so strong that many visitors set up home and live here.

You see, Liverpool folk are genuinely interested in other people, liking to know how each other ticks. We listen with intensity and look for connections, common ground and are eager to learn about other cultures. The humour cuts through all boundaries, it is the Liverpool acceptance of hard times shrugged off in a self-deprecating way. The city will lighten up anyone who treads on its sacred ground, in the most bizarre ways!

LIVERPOOL is a vibrant, dynamic, multi cultural city; bursting at the seams with creativity and a night life that is hard to beat. I should know I'm out most Friday nights at the Zanzibar Club, a fantastic live music venue, with up and coming bands and special appearances by the likes of John Power (Cast, The La's), Pete Wylie and Amsterdam.

Other great live music venues are: Heebiejeebies, Magnet, Carling Academy, Barfly, Flannegans (live Irish bands), The Cavern Club (City Centre) and Vinyl on Lark Lane.

My favourite places to eat are Tabac on Bold Street, The Egg Cafe, 16-18 Newington, Liverpool (There are also lots of flyers for the Beatnik in us, for event listings etc). The Greenhills Pub in Allerton do the best carvery in town and prices midweek are a tantalising £5, and there are special reduced rates for vegetarians. Damons (Old Liverpool Airport, Speke) has to be by far the best American diner in the City, renowned for their pork ribs in BBQ sauce, plus kids eat for free!

These places are great for students, travellers and music lovers alike. There are plenty of great comedy nights, open mic nights and poetry readings throughout the week.

Bus fares: Arriva £3 day ticket (best value).
If you plan to stay for a while or are looking to work/study here then shared accommodation is very reasonable, rent from £50 per week. There are plenty of property rental agents along Smithdown Road and across the City. Or check out this list..

There are plenty of youth hostels to choose from if you are an international traveller in a group.
