You will not only make life long friends, you will lose that haunting, repressed, unconnected feeling that bugged you for all those years.  These tips will aid your backpacking experience, so it is the most exciting and stress free adventure of your life.

Always carry lighter items at the bottom of your backpack, heavier items on top provide better support for your spine and muscles.

Use your mobile phone as a journal instead of carrying a book (added weight).  Save as draft if you're on a tight budget; but for extra safety send them to your e mail along with photo's for your own personal travel blog; a great way to share your journey with loved ones.

There's nothing more enjoyable on your travels than making friends along the way.  A pack of cards is invaluable!

Don't forget to pack around three 30 ml waterproof plastic bottles.  All-in-one shampoo and conditioner (also use as body wash), A high factor skin cream (also acts as moisturizer) and detergent (also great for handwashing clothes).

Stock up on salt, pepper, vinegar, mustard and jam sachets etc store in a sandwich bag.

Have a couple of sarongs/headscarves to hand.  They make great table clothes for picnics, blankets to sit on, a belt to keep your trousers up, a wrap-around in case it get cool or too hot and also makes a great partition for a bit of privacy.

Toilet paper has so many more uses than its original intention. Always make sure you have a full roll before you set off.

Collect those perfume and aftershave samples on your travels for your nights out.

Insect repellent and anti histamines are essential BEFORE you leave!  Don't 'leave it till you get there'. You won't thank yourself.

HI and VIP backpacker cards are a must if you plan to stay in lots of hostels and you will save a lot of money in the long run.
